Jennifer Coleman

I’m a native Texan, born and raised in West Texas. I spent my high school years in North Texas, playing clarinet for the Graham High School Band. After graduation, I moved to Nashville to attend Vanderbilt University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology four years later and returned to Graham to work in the local school district. I spent a year working for the GISD Libraries, and then moved to Lubbock to attend graduate school. I enrolled in Texas Tech University’s Museum Science program and spent the next few years learning the finer points of museum work. I completed my internship with the CAF Airpower Museum in Midland, TX and graduated with an MA in Museum Science in 2009.

My first job in the museum field was with the CAF Airpower Museum as Research Coordinator in charge of the archives. Less than a year later I was made Director of Interpretation & Collections. While at the museum, I installed a new exhibit in the permanent gallery, conducted tours, and managed the oral history program. After leaving Midland, I took a position as College and Special Collections Archivist for the Pearce Museum at Navarro College in Corsicana, TX. I arrived just in time to pick up their series of books and exhibits commemorating the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the Civil War. During my three and a half years in Corsicana I edited three of the four books in their “The Civil War Day By Day” series and installed a series of rotating temporary exhibits based on the same materials. I also assisted with school tours, volunteer management, and the annual show and sale in the museum’s Western art gallery. While in Corsicana, I began my design journey through designing text panels and a traveling exhibit for the museum to take to community and educational programs.

I left Corsicana to join the staff of the Texas Association of Museums as Administrative Coordinator. In this position, I managed the membership program, assisted with a full schedule of workshops across the state and oversaw several aspects of the yearly conference and annual meeting. During my time on the TAM staff, I took on all aspects of design for TAM, including flyers, emails, the TAM website and promotional materials for a variety of TAM programs and events, such as the Finding Alternative Futures project managed by former TAM Director Ruth Ann Rugg. I also pursued a certificate in graphic design from Sessions College, completing my studies in 2015. I also began offering my services on a freelance basis to museums in Texas, and had the opportunity to work on a full gallery redesign for the Annie Riggs Museum in Fort Stockton, Texas, as well as a variety of smaller projects.

In early 2018, my husband was offered a job in Boulder, Colorado and we made the move to the mountains. I continued to work remotely for TAM for the remainder of that year while the association conducted a search for its next leader. During this time I took on the technical and design work for the emerging Coalition of State Museum Associations, building their website, managing their e-communications, and providing a full suite of graphic design services and products.

After parting from TAM, I took a position with an association management firm in Denver and have continued my work for a selection of ongoing clients while seeking ways to use my skills to benefit the museum and association community even more. I look forward to hearing from you about how I can help your organization with your design, technical, and exhibit needs.
